Meeting Notes - June 21, 2003

Notes from Saturday, June 21 meeting:

Present: Charles, Eric, Marty, Judy, Tim, Tom, Kay, Gunnel, and Abe

North City candidates meeting:
Maple Leaf and Lake City want us to join them at a meeting with and about local candidates - City and County Councils, Port Commissioners, Monorail Board, etc. Likely to be planned for first week of August.

More Doug Rokke tapes are available for distribution free of charge. Please get a few and distribute them to anyone you think will appreciate the info, and especially any educators or someone who will show it to others.

Debrief of Tuesday's event

Everyone agreed the event was successful - 41 people attended, including our group. We got a good mix of younger as well as older people.
The Shoreline group may want to organize another event like it - Peter was impressed, and someone else in the Shoreline group is trying to contact Gunnel to arrange another event.
We may want to reach out to other groups to repeat the event elsewhere - Ballard, Wallingford, Mercer Island?
We can also look into offering the event to high schools in the fall.
We may also want to approach some of the progressive churches.
We can create a promotional package that includes a sample flier, handouts, etc. for when we talk to others about potential repeat events.
Another possibility is to produce a Cable Access show based on the event.
Suggestions for improvement: enlarge the photos for better visibility; start at 7pm instead of 6:30 - it's too early.

Patriot Act/ Civil Liberties talk

Janet, Judy and others are looking into the possibility of an event focused on the Patriot Act and civil liberties.
Doug Honig from the ACLU was a good speaker.
Rather than have someone from the ACLU speak just to our group, we should organize another event like last Tuesday's.
It would likely be larger than that event, so we'll need a bigger venue (up to 100).
We decided to focus on the effects of the Patriot Act on rights generally, rather than specifically on Arab-Americans - this is/will affect everybody. We can appeal to people's fears and self-interest, rather than their compassion for others.
We can use a church for a larger venue - Broadview or Maple Leaf (where the Gerri Haynes talk was held).

Our focus

We discussed the 2004 election more - Tim suggested a Town Hall meeting where people could discuss why they support certain candidates. Maybe SNOW and/or the League of Women Voters could host something like this. Possible venues could be Seattle Town Hall or Kane Hall on UW Campus.
We should develop fact sheets on a few key issues, and how the candidates stand on them - for instance, one on civil liberties for the Patriot Act event if we have it.

Tim's projects

Tim shared a couple of projects he's currently working on:
Sending info about the military (use and effects of depleted uranium, etc.) to high school newspapers to help counteract military recruiting. Abe and Gunnel suggested he contact the Southern Poverty Law Center, which publishes a Teaching Tolerance periodical to tens of thousands of schools.
Proposing a Peace Center, with office space, shared meeting facilities, and other infrastructure for peace groups. One possible location he's looking into is Magnuson Park.
