Meeting Notes - August 2, 2003

Present: Abe, Tom, Eric, Gunnel, Janet, Kay

Abe & Tom Roadshow:

Kay - Counted twenty-seven people in attendance. Felt good about the outcome and that both speakers were able to successfully diffuse tension generated by commentary of one audience member. Would like to learn more, and suggestedÊclarification of Zionism at future event.

Tom - Interested in finding out how people learn about our group's events to see what method of advertising is most effective.

Abe - Felt somewhat disheartened by verbal standoff with audience member and at seeing usual audience of elders. Would like to do the next presentation for a younger set to encourage their activist involvement. Suggested inviting a third speaker to partake in a teach-in panel with him and Tom. Recommended that Tom pare his discussion to 20 minutes followed by Q-&-A with panel afterwards.

Janet - Suggested bringing the next presentation to Seattle Central Community College.

Abe - Was enthused, has connections through SCCC.

Gunnel - Concerned about Abe's health holding up for future presentations. Suggested bringing in a third speaker who is Jewish, well-versed in Israeli history and can be very tactful during sensitive moments of discussion.

Tom - Suggested that we remind audience members that we are here to educate, not admonish.

Eric - Felt that the event was more challenging for him as facilitator, good learning experience.

Gunnel - Motioned that we discuss at a later time scheduling the next event at SCCC and that we invite third panel member. Suggested thatÊToms talk be limited to what he witnessed while in the West Bank, andÊwhat prompted him to go.

Your Civil Liberties And The "Patriot" Act - September 9th:

Gunnel - Met with committee members Ellen Finkelstein and Howard Gale. August 18th general SNOW meeting to discuss USA PATRIOT Act and the King County Resolution against said act. Opportunity for a unifying, renewed point of focus for SNOW and coalition-building with communities of color. Shoreline, Capitol Hill, Eastside SNOW, and otherÊgroups have shown interest in working on the issue. Committee would like to see SNOW invest money and energy behind it and not just endorse it. Gunnel encourage our group members to attend 8/18 meeting. King County Council on recess until September, will be focusing on the budget when reconvening. Suggested that two people from North Seattle group table for two hours after our weekly meeting, once a week, to collect signatures on the King County petition against the Patriot Act, bring voter registration forms, Freedom Ride,Êand 9/9 event flyers.

Group discussed various places to table, agreed upon 85th & Greenwood as the ideal venue.

Gunnel - Announced that ACLU is offering aÊteach-in for the USA PATRIOT Act on Thursday, August 14th at Keystone Church at 7:00 PM for resolution petition signature-gatherers. Suggested that we focus on getting word out for our event on 9/9.Ê Possible press release venues of The Stranger, Seattle Weekly, KBCS 91.3 FM, Public Access cable.

Eric - Offered to check media list deadlines, will send list to Gunnel and Kay to research contact people.
