KING COUNTY RESOLUTION AGAINST THE PATRIOT ACT PASSED!

McKenna drafted the newest version or the Resolution which passed unanimously.

This Resolution was not as strong as we would have hoped. SNOW did not endorse the Resolution in the form it was passed and expressed opposition to weakened language, but decided not to stand in the way of passage. On the positive side, we are now added to the 224 communities that have passed resolutions against the PA.

Eric had questions about what to say about it on our website; he suggested individuals contact County Council reps to express disappointment in the watered down version. There was some discussion about changing direction toward supporting the SAFE Act, legislation in the US Senate which would roll back some of the more onerous aspects of the PATRIOT ACT. Eric will list links to the resolution and to the Safe Act on the website.

State wide passage would be a risky endeavor due to the shorter legislative session. Eric suggested presenting an initiative, but it would require a huge coalition of groups, more money, and a minimum of 300,000 signatures. Charles raised concern about SAFE Act passage negating a state-wide resolution effort. So: state resolution, or ballot initiative? Eric suggested educating people about the SAFE Act.

ERIC'S BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

Eric passed around Fostering Sustainable Behavior by McKenzie-Mohr. The book has some excellent strategies for environmental organizing that can be applied to all types of political organizing, including many that the group is working on and contemplating working on.
