Meeting notes from North Seattle Neighbors for Peace & Justice Jan. 8, 2005

Attending: Gunnel, Brenda, Bruce, Judy, Eric, Kay, Tom, John, Jane, David, Rhonda, Vicki, Charles, Brent, Elaine

next potluck & meeting: Sunday, Feb. 6, 4-7pm at Elaine's - 520 N 120th St

Peak Oil Subcommittee:

There is a lot of action on this front. Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) and other groups are planning a regional conference on the topic of oil and conservation this spring. There is also a "big SNOW" working group on this topic. We should make sure our efforts compliment, rather than duplicate, these initiatives.

Eric and Elaine met and came up with a list of potential actions. From this list, we will do the following:

Plan a showing of the movie The End of Suburbia in mid-February at the Broadview Community Church of Christ (Charles will talk to Dan to get permission and reserve the date). Potential dates are Sun, 2/13 or Tues 2/15. We do not need a speaker since the movie is enough to start the discussion.

Develop some informative handouts to give people after the movie.

  • Weatherization assistance programs (Brent will research)
  • FlexCar availability in the neighborhood (Elaine will research)
  • Biodiesel as a heating fuel (Eric will research)

There was a suggestion to use our meetings as a "support group" to help each other conserve oil. It was deemed this would eat up too much time but we could do it during the potluck time.

Also, a suggestion to check out the New Apollo Project - http://www.apolloalliance.org/

Iraq Committee:

two current actions - Falluja letter and posters

Falluja Letter- SNOW has crafted a letter protesting what has happened in Falluja and calling for a withdrawal and investigation. It will be printed in the P-I and then we will conduct a campaign to get additional signatories. It will be posted on the SNOW Web site and people can sign it online. At some point soon, delegations will take it to our Senators. Gunnel asked for volunteers to join the delegations; if you are interested, contact her at gunnel1@w-link.net

Posters - Tom helped make some very nice, large posters featuring the photos and stories of Iraqi children injured in the bombing. They will be mounted for use at rallies as well as reproduced in smaller sizes for easier posting in places like churches. We agreed to include at least one poster of an injured US soldier if we can find one who is willing to be publicized. Judy will try to find a soldier whose photo and story we can include.

Counter-recruiting:

Jane's daughter's school was visited by a volunteer counter-recruiter after a recruiting visit. Abe will contact those who volunteered for this committee (Jane, Rhonda, Charles, Tina) soon to start planning action.

MLK Day rally & March - Monday, Jan. 17

We agreed to bus to the rally as a group (for those who will not go for the workshops). The workshops and rally are at Garfield HS (workshops 9:30, rally 11, march starts at noon). SNOW groups will meet for the march at noon near the ballfields behind the gym.

100,000 and counting - Sat. Jan 15

There will be a "death tableau" of 1,000 people each representing 100 Iraqis who have died in this war. The action will be in Olympia at the Capitol and SNOW is endorsing it. Gunnel is organizing a carpool for NSNPJ members who are interested. If you know you will go, please go to the Web site to sign up so they know haw many people they will have: http://100thousandandcounting.org/

Book Discussion

Our first book discussion will be at the Broadview Library, Jan. 19 at 6:30. We will be discussing George Lakoff's "Don't Think of an Elephant." Brent will be picking the next book, then those at the discussion can propose and decide on future books.

Please send suggestions of good books you have read to Eric at maias@speakeasy.net and he will add them to the book list on the Web site. include the title, auther, and a sentence or two about the book.

Bannering

Bannering has been cancelled lately because of poor turnout. We will try bannering once a month with firm committments to see if we can sustain higher turnout (it is always more encouraging with more than 6). We will banner this month on Sunday, Jan. 23 from 1 - 2 pm.

Lantern Procession

Brent organized a group of members who walked in the interfaith procession at Green Lake on New Year's Eve. They carried the candle lanterns we created ant the lanterns were well received by other participants. The event had an estimated over 200 people participating.
