The USA PATRIOT Act, passed hastily after the terrorist attacks in 2001, greatly expands Federal police powers and undermines
many of our basic constitutional rights. Join us in opposing this dangerous attack on American rights and values.
King County has passed a resolution to Protect your Civil Rights
The King County Council passed a resolution in support of the civil rights and civil liberties of county residents. The resolution
as passed was amended from the original resolution introduced. We accept the resolution, but cannot support the final language as passed.
The bill does include language supporting the passage of the SAFE act. Some of the changes from the original resolution include:
- the final resolution does not explicitly denounce the USA PATRIOT ACT as a threat to our civil liberties
- the final resolution left out language intended to protect individuals from legal scrutiny based solely on their country of origin,
religion, ethnicity, or immigration status.
For more information, see the PATRIOT ACT page on the SNOW Coalition Web site.
Support the Security and Freedom Ensured Act of 2003
Support the SAFE Act, a bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate to fix many of the USA PATRIOT Act's most dangerous shortcomings. This bill
(S.1709) is co-sponsored by Sen. Maria Cantwell, among others.
